I've never been very keen on Rex either. I hear it and I think bone (either dog or dinosaur).

Hmm... Rex isn't exactly my favorite (I do admit that I think of dogs and dinosaurs as well), but it goes well with Freddy, Hugo and Oscar, I think. I'm not really a fan of Rex with their surname, Wickham, though. Rex Wickham. Too much K for me...
I personally love Rex. Sassy, cute and masculine at the same time.
I just feel that Rex is too short for a name. Choose something else and have Rex as a nickname?
